A few final housekeeping notes:

  • Why didn’t you or your favorite sex blogger make the list? Read this post. It probably wasn’t personal! We had over 250 different blogs nominated this year.
  • Your number is relative to the other bloggers on this list, not relative to your position last year. So, if you were #10 last year an are #40 this year, that doesn’t necessarily mean you’re a worse blogger than you were last year. Besides, you really shouldn’t care too much about this list. After all, it’s just one person’s humble opinion. Don’t beat yourself up if you aren’t as high on the list as you thought you might be or even if you aren’t on the list at all. Just use it as motivating to continue to grow as a blogger!
  • If you find a broken link, let me know! With a list this big, there are bound to be a few errors.
  • If you’re on the list and want to be called a different name (names are tricky in this blogging niche) or want me to add your Twitter handle, let me know!

Why You Really Shouldn’t Care About My Top Sex Bloggers List

Right now, nominations are open for the Top Sex Bloggers of 2012 list, this year’s edition of the annual list I compile to celebrate the top bloggers in this niche. As always, announcing that I’m creating this list has been met with both enthusiasm and critical debate. So today, let me set the record straight.

If you’re a blogger, you really shouldn’t care about my Top Sex Bloggers list.

This is perhaps too general of a statement. You should care about the list for the following reasons:

  • It can introduce you to new sex blogs that inspire your own writing. You might not otherwise find these people
  • You can take the opportunity to network with the bloggers on the list. Having relationships with other sex bloggers can help your own blogger efforts.
  • When there’s a “top list” of any sort, we’re motivated to blog better in the hopes of being named to it.

But you shouldn’t care about my list because it doesn’t mean anything about your own blogging abilities. This list, like most, is 100% subjective and relative. Even in my eyes, it’s never perfect, and I often go back and think, “Why did I not list so-and-so?” or “What was I smoking when I ranked so-and-so that high?”

In other words, this isn’t science. Not only do mistakes happen, but opinions change. And bloggers change, too. The blogger I thought was the bee’s knees today might do a really shitty job tomorrow.

I try really hard not to make this a popularity contest and instead rate everyone based on the quality of their work. But even I will admit that I’ve left people off this list because I don’t like them personally, even though their work is decent. It has nothing to do with criticizing my list. You can do that all day long and I’ll still rank you if I feel like you deserve it. But some people are just ugly inside, mean and nasty throughout the year to people who don’t deserve it. When I see that happening, I can’t judge their work objectively or even subjectively because I just feel sad for them and upset for the people they’ve hurt.

It can sting when we aren’t recognized, especially when we put so much of ourselves into our blogs. I know this as much as anyone. I’ve been blogging for several years (both on this blog and elsewhere), and it feels like a knife twisting in my whenever a “top bloggers” list comes out and I’m not included. Sometimes, I want to scream when I see the (in my opinion) flippant, less interesting bloggers who do make the list instead of me.

Don’t quit. Don’t walk away, thinking you’re not good enough. Don’t give too much weight to my list or any other list out there.

After all, if you do good work and truly feel passionate about what you’re blogging about, a list like mine shouldn’t matter. If you are really contemplating giving up after not being on my list, perhaps it is time to question whether or not blogging is really right for you. You can use “but I wasn’t named a top blogger” as an excuse, but to me, it points to deeper problems. Someone who truly loves and believes in what they are doing wouldn’t just give up because of a silly, arbitrary list.

Care about my Top Sex Bloggers list, but care for the right reasons. Care because it can help you, regardless of whether or not you are on it. Care because it can inspire and motivate you to find new, amazing blogs in this space. But don’t care because you see it as an indication of whether or not you are good at what you do. You know in your soul if you are a good blogger or not. You don’t need me to tell you that.

The Time Has Come! Nominations are Open for the 2012 Top Sex Bloggers List!

Update: Nominations are now closed! If you want a reminder via email when the list is posted, make sure you scroll to the bottom of this post and sign up from my mailing list. :)

Can you believe it’s been a year already? I feel like it was just yesterday that I was opening nominations for the 2011 list, and now it’s 2012 already. Where has the time gone? Every year, I look back, amazed at how different and wonderful my life has become in just 12 months.

Are you ready with your nominations for this year’s Top Sex Bloggers list? I even have an ultra sex prize for one lucky winner! Recently, I picked up all five of the new Wonderland toys – awesome Alice in Wonderland themed vibrators from Doc Johnson. I also picked up a second set – so I’ll be drawing five lucky winners to receive these toys. Five winners for the fifth annual list seemed pretty fitting!

How do you enter? Easy: Just leave a comment below with your nominations for the top sex bloggers list! You can earn an extra entry by tweeting about the nominations to encourage others to leave their nominations as well (no need to leave a second comment, just include @SweetRori somewhere in your tweet and make sure you link back to this post!).

If you’ve done this before, you know the deal. Here are the details for you newbies:

1. No nominating yourself. Feel free to post about nominations on your blog to encourage readers to nominate you.

2. Each nomination should include the blog url. I don’t know everyone, and some bloggers have the same names.

3. Blog content can be anything sex related -pictures/videos, erotica, sex ed/advice, opinion, poetry, personal journal. As long as the content is related to sexuality at least half of the time, it’s eligible. Nothing illegal, obviously.

4. The blog can’t be protected. It’s ok if a few of the posts are protected, but the entire blog can’t be behind a password.

5.  The blog should be at least a year old, but anyone who’s been blogging since at least Jan. 1, 2012 will be considered. Special exceptions will be made for someone who has recently moved to a new blog, but was previously blogging somewhere else.

6. You can nominate as many bloggers as you like, but please try to limit to your very favorites.

7. The blog must be active, which means that the blogger posts at least once every week or so. When I judge in September, any blog with no posts during August or fewer than five posts since June 1 will be eliminated.

8. A few blogs have been retired! Those who have placed in the Top Ten three years in a row or who have been named as the top blog are retired to make room for new awesome bloggers on the list. Retired bloggers are: Sinclair Sexsmith, Coquitten (blog no longer available), Guy New York and the Dirty Gentleman, and Kendra Holliday.

9. Nominations close on August 31. I recommend nominating your favorites right now so you don’t forget. You an also come back and leave an additional comment with more nominations if you think of someone else who deserves to be on the list. (Note, only one comment will be counted as an entry to win a Wonderland vibe.)

Comments are moderated here, so if you’ve never posted here before, please be patient while I manually approve your nominations comment. If it doesn’t appear within one week, feel free to email me about the problem at rori-at-betweenmysheets-dot-com. Why Wasn’t I Named a Top Sex Blogger?

It’s that time of year again…I’m getting ready to release my Top Sex Blogger list. Every year, I compile this post to highlight the 100 people I think are doing the best job in the sex blogging world. It isn’t scientific and it might not even be fair. They’re just my favorites. I’ve written about this before, but here’s why you might not have made the list:

  • You haven’t been around long enough. I like to feature blogs that are at least a year old, since it means you likely aren’t going to just disappear.
  • You weren’t nominated. I can’t know about every great sex blog out there. I put the call out for nominations every summer and promote it as much as possible, so if you didn’t invite your fans to nominate you, I might not even realize you weren’t on my list of blogs to review. Yes, even if you’re friendly on Twitter or you were on the list last year. People get forgotten unless they’re on the nominations list. Sorry.
  • Your blog hasn’t been updated in a long time. I like to promote blogs that have new content for readers. Likewise, if you’ve posted a “goodbye” post telling us that you are quitting, I took you out of the running, even if you were active in 2011 at some point.
  • Your blog is password protected or otherwise unreadable. Sorry, but readers typically don’t want to go to the trouble to email you and request a password.
  • I don’t like you. This sounds harsh, but some of you are complete cunts and assholes. It has nothing to do with your actual blog. I’m talking about you as a person. If you treat people poorly, I’m not going to promote your work, even if you are a good writer. This applies to very few sex bloggers out there, but there were some who got nominated that I refuse to promote. Want to be on the list next year? Then keep doing good blogging work but stop being such a jerk.
  • Your blog isn’t really about sex. A lot of you have “sex blogs” but you really talk about your life more than about anything related to sex or sexuality. That’s okay, but when I have to make hard decisions about who makes the cut for this list, someone who blogs about sex more regularly is probably going to win out.

And the number one reason you’re not on my list? There were over 200 blogs nominated! Not everyone is going to make my list. Some of you write great blogs, but I’m trying to highlight people who go above and beyond to do something really awesome online. Keep trucking! You have a really good start and I know you can make the list next year!

A lot of people are not going to agree with the list I’ve created. That’s okay! It’s my list. You should definitely consider making your own list on your blog to promote the people you like. That’s what is so great about having a blog – you get to fill it with your opinions. :)
